Exile: Escape from the Pit is a role-playing game created by Jeff Vogel of Spiderweb Software. Also known as Exile I, Escape from the Pit was released in January 1995 and is the first game of the Exile trilogy. All games of the Exile series were later revived in the Avernum series. In this game, a party of newly created characters is thrown into the subterranean world where prisoners and low lives are exiled from the world above. However, the party will then discover a civilization formed from the outcasts of the Empire above, with a culture beset by constant warfare and the threat of monsters, demons, and unexplainable monsters. The game is designed to be non-linear, with a main story focused on getting out of the underground world and getting revenge on the Empire, but not before banishing the demon king Grah-hoth to secure an escape path to the surface.

Installation Note

The game is a 16-bit application that does not run natively on a 64-bit OS. In order to effectively run them on modern computers, users must use virtual machines (like DOSBox, and PCEm) and install an appropriate OS.
