Unlike most RPGs, this game comes with a plethora of choices and decisions that directly affect the story. The player's interaction and exploration of the world have a big impact on how the battles will be fought and how the story will end. The game also features a myriad of cryptographic puzzles that can be solved as a community, unique pixel art with varying environments and themes, funny gags and dialogues, and sadness - lots of advanced-level sadness that will leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

In Heartbound, levels and consumables matter very little. The fights change based on your relationship with other characters or as consequences of what you have done. Victory will be decided purely by your skills. There are no random battles and every enemy you encounter has a unique mini-game. Getting beaten never ends in death, some scenarios and story paths only open up if you lose some battles.
